A New Community Bringing Breast Cancer Awareness To Women Of Color

There is a new community bringing breast cancer awareness to women of color called For the Breast of Us

(Love the name. Isn’t it cute and catchy?)

When the brand was created in 2019, the founders simply wanted to create a place where other women of color affected by breast cancer could connect with women who looked like them, felt like them, and navigated the same challenges they do.

Their mission was and still is to empower women of color affected by breast cancer to make the rest of their lives the best of their lives through education, advocacy and community.

Founders Jasmine Souers and Marissa Thomas started out as online friends through Instagram, and realized they had breast cancer in common. They both used social media, during and after their treatment and realized how powerful it is. It was a great tool for them, but it lacked images of women that looked like them.

They wanted something to reference when you hear the words: “You have breast cancer” or “A mastectomy is needed, and this is what it will look like.” They heard from many women if there was one area that could be changed, it would be that.

Taking this as guidance, they decided to build a community instead.

Their website says, “We couldn’t get a seat at the table. So, we’re building our own!”

Two years later, as leaders of a growing community, they’ve connected with countless women and understand that representation is about more than being visible; it’s about being heard, valued and understood. It’s about truly being seen as a person — more than a patient, more than a disease, and more than a stereotype.

They are survivors and are giving other survivors a voice through photography and community. 

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so this story is very necessary.

As a continuation of this story, I found some info shared by Dr. Nooshin K. Darvish, a licensed naturopathic physician who has been practicing integrative cancer therapies for more than 25 years. You should also know that Dr. Darvish has been selected as the top medical director of the year in regenerative medicine for 2021.

She shares some tips to reduce breast cancer risks

Dr. Darvish shared that a cancer diagnosis requires making changes in our lives, mindsets, daily habits, and lifestyle practices to reduce our risks for cancer. She shares that as women, we all need to be aware we have risks, because we all undergo modern-day stressors, chemical exposures from environment and food, lifestyle, and nutrition. On the other hand, by incorporating some simple practices into our daily lives, she says we potentially can reduce our cancer risks whether we have a family history of cancer or not.

Diet and lifestyle do matter when it comes to cancer and  preventing it. 

DON’T: Consume diets high in sugar, including alcohol, wine, fruit juices, natural and artificial sweeteners, as well as processed foods, feed cancer cells. 

DO: Limit sugar and alcohol intake, as well as processed foods, while increasing intake of organic whole foods. Eat Organic plant-based foods, such as green leafy vegetables and the cruciferous family of veggies, such as broccoli, cauliflower, arugula, bok choy, and cabbage. They contain a naturally occurring compound called sulforaphanes.

Turmeric provides potent anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive activity while inhibiting cancer cell growth through a variety of biochemical pathways. It is most effective when consumed warmed, either in cooking or in hot liquid, and in combo with some type of fat or oil and black pepper. 

 
Some cancer-prevention supplements Dr. Darvish recommends:
  • Vitamin D in a dry powder capsule (not in an oil base). 

  • Extracts from broccoli sprouts called sulforaphane or indole-3-carbinol 

  • Curcumin (turmeric extract) 

  • Green tea extract (EGCG)
